It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce that Searchlight’s founder, Gerry Gable, has died at the age of 88. He had been in frail health for some time, but a recent hospital admission proved too much and he died peacefully last night.
Gerry was one of the most important figures in post war anti-fascism, not just in this country but also internationally.
Active in the 62 Group in the 1960s, he adopted their approach to intelligence-led anti-fascism and, with Maurice Ludmer, launched Searchlight as a magazine in 1975. It went on to enjoy 50 years of continuous publication until its transition online last year. From day one it was hated by the fascists and right-wing extremists.
We will publish a full appreciation and obituary in due course and we will be announcing details of an event to mark his life and achievements.
But in the meantime, we are reproducing the final article Gerry wrote for Searchlight, a valedictory retrospective for the final print issue, published last February.
No Pasaran!
