A landmark court ruling has held the home secretary, Priti Patel, accountable for failures in ensuring that deaths in immigration detention centres are properly investigated.
Two judges in the immigration court ruled on Wednesday that three of the home secretary’s detention policies breached human rights rules and that she could not frustrate or undermine inquiries into these deaths.

Oliver Bel, of Salford, bought the ‘manual’ online, which contained methods of creating homemade bombs, a court was told.
Mr Bel, 24, came to the attention of the Counter Terrorism Unit in Cambridge after his tutor reported the anti-Semitic remarks he posted online, Manchester Crown Court heard.
Jurors were told that in a Facebook post, Mr Bel said: “I just want to go on a killing spree.”
A day later, the court heard, he posted: “Hate them Jews, kill them all then kill all n******”.

A Metropolitan Police officer who broke a black father’s leg in front of his children has been jailed after a judge said that the case was a “clear case of racial profiling”.
Charlie Harrison, 39, attacked Carl Abrahams, 47, as he left a graveyard with his two sons, aged 13 and 16, who had been placing flowers on their mother’s grave in Forest Gate, east London, on New Year’s Eve 2018.

The trial of 11 suspected members of a far-right “terror” group has begun in the German city of Stuttgart.
The suspects, aged between 32 and 61, were arrested in February last year.
Prosecutors say the 11 men – all Germans – were members of Gruppe S (Group S), which planned attacks on migrants, Muslims and politicians, with the aim of sparking a civil war.
